Patches laid by the small pound looking over her reflection. So many scars, stitches, and memories of pain written into her skin. Her heart beat so still alive but living in fear. The surroundings are so pretty, so peaceful if only they would seep onto her bringing the same just for a moment.

Some of her fears are reasonable. Sand reminds her of the place she spent so long in a cage. There were no windows to look out of, but the heat and sand were inescapable. Such is the fear almost palatable, who would be next or what. The dark basement is a horror show, with a captive audience and forced performers.

Washing away tears as the past came to haunt. Which color eye is the one she was born with, or skin. Did she always have wings? This bone arm is something that monster did.

She forced out a whistle, leading to humming a song. A constant distraction, a way to let the feelings flee the body just for a little. Music soothes, hearing the instruments, feeling the lyrics. She wished to dance but then someone might notice her differences. Maybe a little dance in the plate armor would still hide the monster within.

It had been five years since the fire that freed her and other subjects. Subject 28 also known as Gred, gave her the name Patches. His best gift starting the rebellion, possibly hurting their captor and setting the lab ablaze. Gred fell that day but gifted Patches and others freedom.

Now a new cage the bars dread. What if the monster still lived? What if someone finds out about all the scars, wings, and arm? Can patches return to normal? Who to trust, and where are the other test subjects?

Patches day dreams about being a normal dwarf some day. Maybe finding the other subjects and helping them. Her experience has led to distrust of most people, especially wizards.

Being an adventurer is a decent source of income. Plus no one questions the armor and cloak hiding her disfigurements. Slaying monsters helps vent the bad feelings, feel alive, and a sense of helping society.

Patches despises cruelty towards others, lying and harsh words.

Those who are kind she worries are being two faced and just hiding their vile intent.

Doubtful of others, super self conscious about her disfigured body, and scared of magic users. Patches still holds to an unlikely dream of being normal. Her biggest vice is music or instruments, and ale. She has spent some time learning to play a lute and created several songs. Just too scared to share her talent. When the memories get to her, ale is another comfort.

If Patches ever did get a normal body, her dream life might be possible. Spending her days at the hearth singing and playing for others to enjoy. Along with a few tankards of ale.
